What is the "Fifth Sun"? The Aztecs believed that our universe went through a series of deaths and rebirths and in each age, the world was destroyed through a different agent. This sequence of events was repeated four times, each era beginning with creation, and ending in catastrophic destruction, which then brought about another creation and improved form of life. The four forces that emerged from the four suns previous to ours were represented by the four elements: earth, air, fire and water. Finally, a fifth sun, symbolized by harmonic movement, not an element as the other eras, achieved cosmic stability, thus being able to create the humanity that exists today. We exist in the current time period of the Fifth Sun, and it is marked by constant movement, innovation, and balance because no single force dominates.
